<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I love iPad apps!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I found Dropbox and downloaded the free app in seconds. I have positioned it in my six "always there" apps at the bottom of the screen and I have installed Dropbox on my PC. A Dropbox icon is in the task bar and start menu as well as in my Favourites.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Signing up for an account requires an email address and password</span>.<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> A passcode can be added to sign in on the iPad.</span><br />
<br />
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
My free account has up to 18 GB storage and an additional 2 GB + 500 MB per referral. You will see my invitation through Dropbox on Twitter and Facebook. You can refer through your Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc accounts as well. I have sent a few direct email invitations to my admin. </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Additional storage can be purchased at a rate starting at $9.99/ month or $100.00/year.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Team Dropbox accounts are high priced and will not be an appropriate use of school funds. Five accounts start at $795.00.<b> I will recommend teachers and students register for the free account. Teachers may want to create a school work email account to accommodate student sharing.</b></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Library netbook cart</td></tr>

<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Our school has just purchased and introduced 20 iPads for each of our three grade levels. The iPads are stored with the netbooks on a cart which can be used by teachers in their classrooms. Each cart has wireless capabilities and the netbooks are networked to the school board intranet.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
We have always had issues with students either emailing through hotmail accounts or using USB drives (I have a collection of unclaimed drives in my office) to transfer work between home and school. Now with the introduction of iPads (not networked) there is a need to find a way to share finished or in progress work.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Recent fundraising and my request for iPads in the library has promised me four devices for library use. I have been frustrated by a lack of networking; our first five netbooks were not networked or imaged by the board so there is no connection to student files and without "protection" on these netbooks I hesitate to allow hotmail use and USB drives get lost.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
I have an Evernote account and have been trying to use it more often for personal file sharing between home and work but have yet to benefit as much as I had expected. <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/" target="_blank">Dropbox</a> has come up in discussions with others introducing technology in their schools and from limited understanding I think this tool is worth investigating.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n8D75Xgn7WE/T1OqnFhkcFI/AAAAAAAAAX8/fum3TextpHw/s1600/meme+tags.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n8D75Xgn7WE/T1OqnFhkcFI/AAAAAAAAAX8/fum3TextpHw/s320/meme+tags.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
WIKIPEDIA defines an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_meme" target="_blank">Internet meme</a> as: </div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="color: black; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
an idea that is propagated through the World Wide Web. The idea may take the form of a hyperlink, video, picture, website, hashtag,
or just a word or phrase. The meme may spread from person to
person via social networks, blogs, direct email,
news sources, or other web-based services. An Internet meme may stay
the same or may evolve over time, by chance or through commentary,
imitations, parody,
or by incorporating news accounts about itself. Internet memes can
evolve and spread extremely rapidly, sometimes reaching world-wide
popularity within a few days.</div>
</blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">In order to better prepare our students for their digital citizenship, access to and understanding of internet culture is imperative.</span> <br />
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Internet Memes are the sharing of popular culture. Every student with internet, cell phone, or iPad access will know which are the popular and current memes. Memes might have more place in middle or senior schools
than in younger grades. In my role as a teacher librarian and literacy leader in a middle school I can offer an introduction to memes as part
of the media curriculum. <span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">Until</span> we educate our students about the basics of meme-ing we can't expect to have discussions about ethics or social action. </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<u>MEME Basics </u></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-define meme</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-identify currently popular memes</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-learn to recognize memes vs. truth (critical thinking piece)</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-define the audience ("remixers, "sharers") for a particular meme</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-how was this meme spread?</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-why did this meme spread?</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-how was the meme created (skills required)?</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-how was the meme remixed?</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-recognize the collaborative, modification and sharing nature of memes</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-identify counter memes</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
-create a remix of a favourite meme or create a counter meme</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Memes are
engaging, motivating and relevant. I might even suggest memes be included as part of our media or technology classes. </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
One issue which will continue to create discussion amoung educators is where will we access engaging
and more importantly appropriate meme content.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
I remember when a book was just
that, a book. In my reading life as a child there were no spinoffs, no
television shows or movies; advertising was not aimed at children and the sale
of merchandise related to literature was rare if it existed at all. In truth
children`s literature was sadly lacking in appeal and rarely offered formats
other than the printed page. I remember reading a comic based on a tale I had
read but my reading experience of literature stopped there. We can fast forward
to the reading experience of a child in 2012.</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
The Process</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
I could not have imagined the extent
of the opportunities for children to access their favourite books, series, and literary
characters on the web. Booth (2011) notes “the importance of recognizing
student choice and popular culture in the lives of our students” (p.22). My
exploration clearly exemplifies the opportunity for and connections between
popular culture and children’s literature. Oddly when students in my library
were asked about their web experience with Geronimo Stilton many responded with
shrugged shoulders and head shakes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This
exploration began simply by using Google to search for ‘Geronimo Stilton’ leading
to results including: the official Geronimo Stilton site, the Geronimo Stilton
News site, the North American publisher site, Google images, Amazon booksellers
and Wikipedia. I saved the links on Diigo and visited each site exploring
further and attempting to organize the results in some sort of clear and
deliberate manner. I needed a place to start and found on copies of both a
paperback novel and a graphic novel, web site addresses for Scholastic Book and
Papercutz graphic novel publishers, and the International Geronimo Stilton
World site. This is where I would begin my experience in the expansive electronic
world of Geronimo Stilton.</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
I was surprised that more of my
student Stilton fans did not know about the web presence of this character but was
not surprised when my niece led me to a few gems through her digital literacy
expertise. She took me through Google images to online colouring sites,
introduced me to Google translator for the Italian language pages of the Stilton
site and reminded me of her passion for fanfiction.net. Revisiting Google Books
after attending a professional development workshop featuring Google apps I
located previews of a number of Geronimo Stilton titles as well as Kingdom of
Fantasy and Thea Stilton spinoff titles. The opportunities are endless allowing
readers to preview titles before buying or borrowing a book, and to experience
online worlds full of information and story. O’Connell<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;"> (2011) states that students “</span>need a range of literature and
information options, delivered to them via a variety of physical and virtual
means, from books to all manner of media and digital objects, via a plethora of
digital devices” <span style="mso-no-proof: yes;">(para.12) and the contemporary
reading experience of a child fulfills this need.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;">Surprises
and Reflections</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;">I
have witnessed the popularity of this series of books through the constant requests
for copies at my library. My students may be older than the targeted audience
but some have become fans of the television cartoons. The wide range of Geronimo
Stilton merchandise available for purchase including: books, audio and e-books;
soap bubbles, chocolate eggs and playsets with buildings and figures; DVD’s and
video games surprised me. I was even more surprised that the merchandising of
Geronimo Stilton has yet to reach the same extent in North America as it has in
Europe. It seems in Europe Geronimo Stilton is so popular that “live” appearances
are common, a Geronimo Stilton Musical has been staged and Geronimo Stilton is
the centre of a public service campaign for internet safety. I wonder if North
American readers might engage with this character based series in the same way?
</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
I have always thought of libraries
as being equalizers for students from environments lacking in literature but
what if the internet also leads to recognition of the importance of literature
by providing all readers with access to alternate forms which “bring children
and books together”<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(Chambers,
1985, p. 11)</span>
encouraging readers to continue reading even when they are not at school. Access
to web sites based on Geronimo Stilton books offers readers text in many
formats, at any time, in any location with internet access, and with the
increased use of mobile devices experiences are unlimited.</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;">The
ever-present availability of the internet requires that users be educated about
the many aspects of consuming media, especially when targeted by children`s advertising.
Geronimo Stilton fans search online for sites providing entertainment and
information with no regard to source or authorship. Readers are then linked via
search results to the sale of merchandise including television and book
spinoffs, games, and toys connected with the selected popular literature. Being
a wise consumer of merchandise and media is essential and the application of
critical thinking skills related to popular culture depends on reading with an
eye to analyzing and understanding point of view, audience, author motivation, manipulation
and exploitation. Our role as teachers of media, of reading, and of thinking
includes preparing students to question the culture of the internet and to
become aware of more than the face of the product and interpret deeper
messages.</span> Student participation in this type of web search or experience
can also lead to critical thinking that reflects an understanding of online
authenticity, validity and usefulness as an authentic part of learning. <span style="mso-no-proof: yes;"></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% white; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">By encouraging and supporting our students in the
exploration of literature I feel we are providing “the materials for
motivation, differentiation, collaboration and connections necessary for 21st
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span>century learning” <span style="mso-no-proof: yes;">(O'Connell, 2012, para 10). The experiences of
motivated children accessing popular literature and associated links online
will undoubtedly lead to a greater understanding of the online environment and
possibly extend to improved information literacy in classroom tasks. With
teacher facilitators in the form of teacher librarians creating opportunities
to explore and experience the internet through links to literature and
information we are preparing our students for their future: a future that
includes instant access to an increasing variety of sources of information and
knowledge that we are obliged to teach students how to understand and use. I
have always felt my role as an educator has been to teach my students how to
think, not how to remember. Warlick also questions our role as educators when
he asks, “</span><span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Is it just what students can recall at the end of
the year or the course? or is it what they can do and whom they will be 20
years later”<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;"> (Warlick, 2012, para 8)</span>? </span><span style="color: #323232; font-size: 8.5pt; line-height: 200%;"></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% white; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
Future Practice</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 200%;">
Consolidating
an understanding of the availability and of the vast array of sites linked to
the Geronimo Stilton titles and using <a href="http://www.jogtheweb.com/">www.jogtheweb.com</a>
to present the results of my exploration has motivated me to introduce and
share my children`s reading experience and this web 2.0 tool with staff and
students at my school. I hope teachers will be interested in collaborating in
the library to develop lessons using internet reading experiences or the
sharing of connected links. The following are possible opportunities for use:</div>

Moving my library and my students

skills leading to increased understanding of digital and media literacy. My
school library is a place where we can facilitate the learning of “the
intricacies of media literacy in today's information-rich world” <span style="mso-no-proof: yes;">(McCrae, 2012, para 5)</span>. I am committed to this
learning and will attempt to convince my peers of the value of expanding
children’s reading experiences. My role as the teacher librarian is to open the
doors daily to an “active place(s) where students go to create and consult with
information experts”<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;"> (Johnson, 2012, para 3). I
feel the introduction of jogs and online reading experiences will enhance
student learning and encourage authentic and productive learning through
exploration.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This week Mr Stewart and I have introduced our plans for using digital narratives to his grade 6 language classes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Both groups participated in a quick introduction to our Weebly website host and to blogging. The <a href="http://www.brainpop.com/english/writing/blogs/" target="_blank">Brainpop Blogs</a> video got a few chuckles. We looked at <a href="http://flickrcc.bluemountains.net/flickrCC/index.php" target="_blank">flickrcc </a>and <a href="http://www.google.com/advanced_image_search" target="_blank">Google advanced image search</a> for reusable, modifiable images to enhance their sites. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">A letter of permission was added to the teacher site and forms have been sent home for signatures.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Instructions were given for creating their web page.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><blockquote class="tr_bq">

<br />
We used Kist's Snowball activity to develop guidelines for blogging and commenting. Interestingly the guidelines for each class that does this acitivity are very similar.<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This evening I <span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">was called to a Skype video call with my niece in order to help her configure a new laptop. Her well loved and well used netbook had died and with this death went her favourites.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> I was able to convince her to download the Diigo toolbar and join Diigo in order to save her bookmarks</span> where they would be available <b>anywhere and anytime</b> no matter what condition her personal computer was in.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">After adding the Diigo toolbar to her Internet Explorer browser we used the bookmarking feature to save Twitter to her Diigo Library as well as a course site for school. She experimented with highlighting text, capturing images and pages and deleting unwanted results. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">We created a private unsearchable group<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> to store her bookmarks and then she started a search for other groups she might like to join.</span> The Music category attracted her and I suggested she browse for groups with larger numbers of members and recent activity. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Her next step was to download and install Firefox and add Diigo to that browser as well. She seemed pleased with the results and expressed interest in my suggestion to use Diigo to coordinate group research assignments.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This took less than 50 minutes on Skype including time spent with family visiting, waiting for pages to load and downloading Diigo and Firefox.</span><br />

An accurate reflection on my
learning during this inquiry project is illustrated in the following verse by <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/144776" target="_blank">Piet Hein</a>:</div>

“Knowing what<br />
Thou knowest not<br />
Is in a sense<br />
Omniscience.”</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br />Although I had “little experience with or opportunity to use these tools” (Author, 2011, p.2) and recognized my lack of experience, I hoped that blogging about Web 2.0 technology would provide the occasion for me to learn more regarding “the tools I have read about and explore in more depth the tools that have piqued my interest.”(p.3) I expected to become an expert with Web 2.0 tools but in fact what I have learned is that I may be ahead of some of my teaching peers but I have much more to learn thus my Steps to Web 2.0 journey will not end here.<br /><br />This inquiry has become part of the process of creating my Personal Learning Network (PLN). I have been able to access, read, bookmark, save and share countless professional ideas and articles through my slowly growing PLN. </span> <span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><a href="http://youtu.be/9ZEZ7Q3uGfQ">Beylerian (2011)</a> tells us that developing a PLN is valuable because ”it’s a global education that you are trying to model for your family and your students.” <br /><br />I chose to explore Flickr, Thinglink, Audacity, Masher, Diigo, and Blogger (including Google Reader and RSS feeds) but as this blog shows my exploration was extended to include: BigHugeLabs, Jing, Soundcloud, Podomatic, iTunes, Movie Maker (not a Web tool), Tagxedo, Voki, and Clustrmap. I look forward to exploring these technologies further and adding my explorations of new technologies to this blog.<br /><br /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Overall my experience with these Web 2.0 technologies has been successful. I acknowledge that I came across some problems, but these were easily overcome with available alternatives. I foresee that the implementation of Web 2.0 tools in my professional practice will be the area of most frustrat</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">ion and possibly failure but I am prepared to recalculate my route when necessary. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> I hope to continue sharing my learning through in school teacher PD, this blog and Twitter and I will encourage my colleagues to create a PLN using Diigo and Twitter in order to keep up with educational thought and practice.<br /> I will be presenting <i>Understanding Web 2.0 Tools</i> with Brenda Roberts on Wednesday February 1, 2012 at the Ontario Library Association <a href="http://www.accessola.org/ola_prod/OLAWEB/Super_Conference/Welcome/OLAWEB/Super_Conference/Welcome.aspx" target="_blank">Superconference</a> Pre-Conference sessions.</span><br />

I must admit I was interested in seeing if my recent explorations of Web 2.0 had changed my "status".</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Nothing really surprised me.</div>

I recognized most of the tools but still have a way to go...Quora? Foursquare? Gingerbread? Honeycomb? Ice Cream Sandwich?</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
I liked the top ten tool used in the post but partial geekiness doesn't get me any answers about what tool it is or where to find it.<br />
I now follow @FractusLearning on Twitter and Google Reader.</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><i>As the first few months of my Web 2.0 course pass I have begun to dance the Web 2.0 dance just a little quicker. As a new dancer there have been the inevitable missteps.</i></span><br />
<br />

</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">I have done the <span id="goog_1082181993"></span><a href="http://www.flickr.com/" target="_blank">Flickr<span id="goog_1082181994"></span></a>: steps at school without too much stress. I have experimented using Flickr in the library for a few lessons where I showed colour palettes and watercolour paintings. I found a visual of 5 grams of salt for a nutrition lesson and another group used the flickr images on Mashpedia to understand oil spills.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial;">These <a href="http://www.thinglink.com/" target="_blank">Thinglink</a> steps are still in rehearsal. It is a tool I would like to have our students access on their web pages. It remains to be seen whether the thinglink plugin can be activated on Weebly student accounts.</span><br /><br />The Podcasting steps are a bit more complicated than we thought but with more attention to the technical we will have this tool ready for performance. In order to accommodate class podcasting we purchased an upgrade for the PodOmatic site for one year. Some very enthusiastic grade 8 classes have created scripts to use for podcasting their research about issues related to water. Using <a href="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/" target="_blank">Audacity</a> which can be found on the school board computer image was simple although students found trying to transfer from Audacity versions downloaded at home to the school version was impossible due to incompatibly issues. We found microphones to use with our netbook labs and the library has purchased our own microphone/head sets. Unfortunately <span style="font-family: Arial;">problems developed when the microphones would not record and when classroom noise levels interfered with recording.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">In order to publish student podcasts we needed to contact </span><a href="http://www.podomatic.com/" target="_blank">PodOmatic</a> support. They instructed us to have students use the same login and password to access and publish their episodes on our podcast channel. <br />One more thing: we are looking into a school Voicethread Account </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">and a staff learning session in the library </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">to allow more students access to this tool for broadcasting on the internet .<br /><br /><span style="font-family: Arial;">Video Creating is a dance of frustrations. The students in small groups collected video clips for editing to create commercials for Media Studies. Students were given the choice of using <a href="http://masher.com/">Masher.com</a> or Movie Maker. To access Movie Maker using school computers is simple as the software is on our school board computer image. Some of the library netbooks required downloading of the software which revealed that Microsoft Movie Maker is not available for Windows XP (the system our school computers use).</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Our first attempt to upload to Movie Maker failed because our flipcamera files are MP4 and movie maker reads avi files. </span></span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--GrDu1wP3Ww/Tsau9ivrjvI/AAAAAAAAAR4/7PvIGDjEefs/s1600/flip+camera.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" hda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--GrDu1wP3Ww/Tsau9ivrjvI/AAAAAAAAAR4/7PvIGDjEefs/s1600/flip+camera.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">'<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/71018547@N00/2437471860">Flip Camera</a><br />
http://www.flickr.com/photos/71018547@N00/2437471860</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial;">An email to our Learning Technologies Specialist gave me the link to Free Studio (supported by our board) to use to convert MP4 files to avi. The download and the conversion took forever! And because we were dealing with two classes and six groups in each class and needed to transfer from computer to computer using USB drives and the librarian didn't think to name the files using student names...you can imagine</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> that day. </span><br />
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
Thanks to the engagement of technology the students were patient while they waited and enthusiastic once their files were uploaded and the editing began. Thank you to my colleague who was supportive and had a sense of humour.<br />
I am seriously considering an additional investigation of Animoto for online video editing. Rouleau (2011) writes, <a href="http://read-write-web2.blogspot.com/2011/10/animoto-is-great-eye-candy-but.html" target="_blank">"Animoto allows the user a fast and animated video creation tool that automatically adds in special effects with minimal effort." </a>(para.3)</div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Still practicing these Diigo steps: Although I have had Diigolet added to my library netbook image and suggested to some students they open an account to collect bookmarks for a research assignment there has been little opportunity to teach with Diigo.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Blogging is the dance I most look forward to. Blogger is blocked by our board and Edublogs although recommended by our board as a substitute for Google Blogger doesn't rank highly amoung staff who have class websites. Weebly though, is very well thought of and a number of staff already have accounts. A request to open a Weebly account put to our principal resulted in the purchase of a campus account for 750 students and 30 teachers with the ability for present account holders to migrate to the new school Pro Campus account. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">We have introduced blogging to four classes this week using the Commoncraft videos: <a href="http://www.commoncraft.com/video/blogs" target="_blank">Blogs in Plain English</a>., a <a href="http://www.brainpop.com/english/writing/blogs/" target="_blank">Brainpop Video about Blogs</a> and the Kist (2010) <a href="http://books.google.ca/books?id=trf5Js_wrjAC&pg=PA37&lpg=PA37&dq=kist+snowball+activity&source=bl&ots=g8UVRvQ1t1&sig=AnMZuJTXLOOEftTwhhIXrvByEFc&hl=en&ei=KrbGTqfxGILh0QGIssEi&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCAQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false" target="_blank">Snowball activity</a> (p.37) which has been very successful in helping students recognize the need for <a href="http://stepstoweb2.blogspot.com/2011/11/student-blogging-guidelines.html" target="_blank">guidelines</a> when writing blogs. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I have recreated my BBAT boys' reading blog using Weebly and hope to encourage our boys to read and write using this tool. I am also considering using blogging for my<a href="http://www.accessola.org/ola_prod/OLAWEB/Forest_of_Reading/Welcome/OLAWEB/Forest_of_Reading/Welcome.aspx" target="_blank"> Red Maple Reading Program</a> group to discuss the ten fiction titles selected this year.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">The dance continues and each day I feel a little more sure-footed about the opportunities for using Web 2.0 tools in my school library with the teachers and students.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Would you care to dance?</span></div>
